Spotlight: Cochrane Eyes and Vision (CEV) A Review Group

Cochrane Eyes and Vision (CEV)

Based in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Cochrane Eyes and Vision US Project (CEV@US) advances evidence-based eye care by producing and promoting high-quality systematic reviews that evaluate diagnostic tests and interventions for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases and visual impairment. CEV@US helps clinicians, patients, researchers, and policymakers navigate the growing body of ophthalmic research and make informed decisions based on the best available evidence. CEV@US has received continuous funding from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years.

Since 2002, CEV@US has produced more than 500 publications, including over 200 systematic reviews and updates and over 200 methodological publications, trained more than 200,000 individuals in systematic review methods, and informed more than 127 clinical practice guidelines in the U.S. and internationally. Its network includes more than 450 U.S.-based authors and over 120 peer reviewers.

To sustain this effort, CEV@US recruits, trains, and supports vision researchers, ophthalmologists, and optometrists, who spearhead the systematic review process from question development through manuscript preparation and dissemination. For example, the American Academy of Optometry/CEV@US Educational Program trains optometrists in systematic review methods, building research capacity within the profession and strengthening the optometric evidence base. To date, the program has engaged 121 participants across three cohorts and 14 writing groups, with the first cohort publishing four Cochrane systematic reviews and two scoping reviews.
